A Cheater’s Way to Hem

Hemming is a necessary evil with sewing, but I thought I would share a simple way to hem a garment that adds another layer of interest and still saves a little time. What we will be doing is adding a trim to the bottom of the shirt or dress to be hemmed.

Step one:

Cut two rectangle pieces of fabric the length of the bottom of the garment and twice as wide as the desired trim PLUS seam allowances on all sides.

Step two:

Fold the trim in half RIGHT SIDE OUT. Iron (you could omit this part and it would give a more bubble effect on the skirt) and pin upside down to the bottom of the garment. Should look like this:

Step three:

Sew in place and zig zag raw edges. Then admire your handiwork!
